American Tactical was founded in 2006 by Tony DiChario as a natural adjaceny to his business AmChar Wholesale, Inc. which he launched in 1979 as a distributor of firearms, ammo, and accessories. In turn, AmChar was an evolution of his first store, American Sportsman, that he opened in 1967 at the age of 19. In early days DiChario supplemented his income with money from serving as a fireman. In 1991 he left firefighting to focus on growing AmChar to national distribution. He created American Tactical as a firearms importer, then added CNC manufacturing capability. The FXS-9 pistol is made in Turkey by Ağaoğlu Havacılık, founded in 2011 to serve the small arms industry in Turkey.
