Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) traces its roots back to Israel Military Industries (IMI) which began firearm production in 1933 while the region was under British administration. Israel became a nation in 1948 and the company grew to serve small arms design and production for the Israel Defense Forces. The best-known product is the Uzi. IMI also expanded into global markets for military and law enforcement. In 2005 the Israeli government decided to privatize the small arms division of IMI and it began operation as IWI.
