Kimber was founded in 1979 by father and son Jack and Greg Warne. Jack previously founded Sportco in Australia following WWII. He sold his firearms company in 1968 to Portland-based Omark Industries. This prompted his move to Oregon to serve as president of US operations. Departing Omark to start Kimber, the Warnes made a successful line of rifles through the 1980's but ended in bankruptcy in 1991. The next year Greg secured a new investor, Les Edelman, who owned Nationwide Sports Distributors. The two relaunched Kimber and in 1997 Les bought out full ownership. Kimber is now the worlds largest producer of 1911 style pistols. The Kimber name is an adaptation of the Australian town of Kimba, pronounced Kimber.
