KRISS USA traces its roots back to two Swiss companies. Sphinx was founded in 1876 in Nyon Switzerland as a precision tooling manufacturer and it began making pistols in the 1980s. In 2010 Sphinx was acquired by KRISS Group, a Swiss manufacturer of long-barrel guns. KRISS-USA was established in 2002 as an importer for KRISS and SPHINX brands. The KRISS Group faced financial difficulties due to loss of a major government contract in 2016 and were forced to liquidate soon after. KRISS USA, a separate corporate entity, bought all intellectual property and started production in the US.
