Mossberg was founded in 1919 by Oscar Frederick Mossberg and sons. Mossberg emigrated from Sweden in 1886 and joined Iver Johnson where he supervised manufacture of revolvers and shotguns. Several of his inventions resulted in US patents. He subsequently worked for three other firearms manufacturers, C.S. Shattuck Arms, J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., and Marlin-Rockwell. At age 53 he and his two sons established their namesake company, starting with launch of a .22 pocket pistol. By 1932 the product line had shifted exclusively to sporting rifles and shotguns. Mossberg re-entered the pistol market in 2019.
