Savage Arms was founded in 1894 in Utica, NY by Arthur William Savage, a serial entrepreneur and adventurer. In early life he moved to Australia and took ownership of the largest cattle ranch on the continent. He exited this investment, bought a coffee plantation in Jamaica, and moved to New York to work for the railroad and part time at a gun factory. He and his son began designing guns, patenting new rifle mechanisms, and then launched their own company. Later in life Savage invented the detachable ammo magazine and radial tires. Savage Arms has changed ownership many times, has grown through multiple acquisitions, and moved in 1960 to its current location in Westfield, MA. Through most of the company's history the focus has been on long guns. They supplied light arms and heavy munitions for both world wars. In 2019 the company changed hands to private ownership along with a decision to re-enter the pistol market. After development, the first pistol offerings launched in 2021.
