Springfield Armory was created in 1777 by George Washington for the Revolutionary War. This arsenal in Springfield, MA became the primary center for the design and manufacture of US military firearms until it was closed in 1968 due to federal budget cuts. At this point Elmer Ballance, owner of LH Manufacturing in Texas, registered the trademark of Springfield Armory as he offered the first civilian production of the M14 rifle. In 1974 the company was acquired by Bob Reese, owner of a machine shop in Illinois. He named his company Springfield Armory, moved production to Illinois, and resurrected some of the other iconic models produced at The Armory including the 1911-A1 pistol and the M1 Garand rifle. In 2001 a partnership formed with HS-Produkt to import firearms from Croatia. HS Produkt was founded in 1991 by mechanical engineers Ivan žabčić and Marko Vuković. HS is now one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world. All Springfield XD pistol models are made by HS and all other models are made by Springfield in the US.
