Staccato was founded as Strayer-Tripp International in 1993 by Virgil Tripp and Sandy Strayer. The two gunsmiths partnered to invent a new take on the 1911 pistol platform using a novel frame design and incorporating a double stack magazine. This pistol style was dubbed the 2011(R) due to its higher capacity. In 1994 Strayer left to found Strayer-Voigt and Tripp connected with new operating partners -- Dave and Shirley Skinner, owners of a successful electronics company named Tessco. In 1997 the Skinners bought out the company and renamed it STI. Today the company is owned by private equity and the name was changed to Staccato in 2020.
