Steyr Arms was founded in 1864 by Josef Werndl, son of arms industrialist Leopold Werndl. He was a prolific inventor in rifle technology, and Steyr grew to be the largest arms manufacturer in Europe by the early 20th century. At the end of World War I, gun manfacturing was banned in Austria and Steyr switched to making cars and trucks until the restriction was lifted in 1930. The return to gun production lasted until the conclusion of World War II when again the country was banned from production until 1950. Since then the company has produced long guns, with a single line of pistols introduced in 2000 and refreshed with different versions in subsequent years.
