Tanfoglio traces its roots back to the founding of a company named SATA in 1948 by Giuseppe Tanfoglio who followed in the career path of his father to become a gunmaker. He decided to form SATA after WWII with the Sabatti family, and focused on manufacture of shotgun components. In 1960 Giuseppe left the company to the Sabatti family and formed the Tanfoglio Giuseppe company to manufacture pistols. In 1969 he established a second company, Fratelli Tanfoglio (Tanfoglio Brothers), with his siblings Lino, Marilena, and Massimo. In 1992 he decided to close his namesake company and focus on the family venture. The company now produces double action semi-auto pistols across a wide range of calibers.
